In February 2023, the weather turned to be hot and dry, which was a risk for forest fire ignition and spread, especially for the Temporary Shelters, like Ban Mae La in Tha Song Yang District, Ban Umpiem in Phop Phra District and Ban Nupo in Umphang District of Tak Province.
COERR realized and deemed it necessary to prevent the cause of fire and the loss that might occur and, therefore, organized “Training of Trainers on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)” on February 17th, and “Basic Fire Fighting, Evacuation Fire Drill and First Aid Training” on February 18th, to Emergency Rescue Team and Volunteers, concerned personnel and community members so they can practice if incidents occur. The first training had 70 of 59 males and 11 females attended, and the second training had 246 of 165 males and 81 females participated.
For Ban Nupo Temporary Shelter, where fires had occurred several times, COERR organized “A Campaign for Fire Prevention” to convince the community members to cooperate among them in order to reduce fire risk. Additionally, the campaign was launched to make the community members realize about the loss and sufferings after each fire, the household’s early warning of fire such as pulling out of candles, incense and cooking fire before going to bed or leaving the house, etc.
Moreover, COERR also coordinated with camp authority and community in building fire breaks around these three temporary shelters under the Project “Prevention is Better than Cure”, in Ban Nupo temporary shelter on February 1st, in Ban Mae La temporary shelter on February 8th, and in Ban Umpiem temporary shelter during February 4-14, 2023 where there was an awareness raising & campaign activities on DRR and Fire Break Building.
